The Day of the Granite dawned, a beautiful spring day, and our only worry was that the drivers would be blinded by the sun, and the dust would make it difficult to see any distance.

Suddenly the Beautiful day turned to the darkest day in the History of the Granite City Rally.

Graham Lewis, known to all who knew him or had only spoken to him once, as the Gentleman of Rallying, was killed in a freak accident on stage 2.

The event was stopped, and results declared at the end of stage 3.

Thanks to Charlie Campbell, and the Highland Car Club Marshals, Penine Rescue, Doctor John Tainsh, and Doctor Greg Irons, SMMC Radio Operators, Piper Recovery, for your excellent response, to such a tragic accident.

Our thanks also to all Marshals, Radio Crews, Rescue and Recovery Units, and Doctors, who manned the other stages. Your help and assistance is very much appreciated.

On a personal note. I would like to thank the Stewards, Iain Urquhart (MSA Steward), Jonathan Lord and Kev Kilgour, Graham Anderson (Secretary of the Meeting) Iain Macaslan, Bob Beck (SRC Co-ordinator), John Horton, Diana Baines (HQ Radio Controller), and Caroline Reid (Competitor Liaison Officer) for their help, advice and support, at a very difficult time.

I would also like to thank my organising team for their efforts in preparing for the event, and their sustained commitment through a very difficult and confusing time.

My thanks also to our Sponsors MultiWage who gave us their compassion and understanding, for which I am very grateful

Our thought are with Graham's family, his Driver, and the Crew of the other vehicle involved. Words cannot express the sadness of the Granite committee
