MARSHAL'S CORNER

Motor sport cannot exist without the dedication and commitment of those people who organise and marshal the various events. Their primary roles are to ensure the safety of the competitors and the spectators, and to uphold and apply the rules and regulations of the Motor Sport Association (MSA). A lot of work goes into organising even the smallest motor sport event and on the day, it is the Marshal's who enable events to proceed.

Marshals Training Day - Knockhill

28 January 2007

if you missed it, Please check this page regularly, as the next one will be advertised here

On Sunday 28th January at a windswept (well at least it was dry!) Knockhill Race Circuit about 40 enthusiasts attended a rally marshals training event.  The event was in response to requests from the organising clubs of both the County Saab Scottish Rally Championship and the Hytorc Scottish Tarmack Rally Championship.

Knockhill Circuit had very kindly offered me the FREE use of their Media Centre with all the hi-tec presentation equipment at my disposal.  So hi-tec in fact I had to go in the day before just to make sure I could make a seamless switch from PowerPoint presentation to playing DVD and back to PowerPoint once more!  Not only did they give us the Media Centre but they also let us use the Rally Experience track to set up some dummy stages to give the marshals some practical experience.

Those that attended were a mixture of new marshals attending their first training session and older hands coming along to assist or just to update their skills.  The event was a mixture of classroom lectures covering everything from the basics of what a stage rally is and how to find your way to your allocated stage through timekeeping at the various points along the route to emergency first aid.  Specialist roles such as stage radio communications and rally recovery were also covered.

After lunch, kindly supplied by the East of Scotland association of Car Clubs (ESACC) the gang went to a marshalling point on one of the two special stages which had been set up in the morning.

Cont........

This is where things began to get quite complicated because the marshals were in fact marshalling stages that would be contested by the young guns of the Albar SRC Juniors Programme.Five drivers, including ADMC club member Fraser Gellan, were each given two runs each through the two stages under the watchful eye of non other than Colin McRae sitting in the navigator's seat!

This had both its good and not so good points from a training perspective.  Firstly it put great pressure on the marshals to speed things up as light was fading and this didn't always reflect the reality of real stage events.  Secondly Colin, whilst an ace driver, is not the best of navigators - indeed one marshal put in the wrong finish time by a minute out (slower) and Colin didn't notice!

Fortunately in addition to the Albar Subaru Impreza we also had Alan Cowan and Lock Horsborough in their wee Pug 106 also giving the marshals a hard time - and acting the part well.  Jump starts, no helmets or belts on etc. were all tricks used to try and demonstrate to the marshals the sort of situation they might incur when on a real stage - thanks guys.

All the new marshals were able to swap around so they had experience of all the key marshalling points of a stage.  The afternoon session went on slightly later than had originally been planned but as it started a little later that was not surprising.  We even had a real live situation where a car needed recovered from the stage - fortunately Piper 1 Recovery was to hand and the Impreza ended its day on the end of a tow rope having had a transmission failure on its last run of the day.

The feedback from the day seems to have been largely positive with 15 new marshals signing up to join the MSA Rally Marshals Register, which has to be a good thing!  As for the Albar SRC Junior's event it was won, after a closely contested event which included some laps of the Knockhill Race Circuit with Jimmy McRae assessing their performance as well as our special stages, by Kevin Ross.

Thanks to all those who helped on the day to make the new marshals' induction into marshalling a good one.

ADMC Event Marshals

As well as requiring Marshal's for the events organised and run by the ADMC, the club also participates in other club's events as a reciprocal arrangement to ensure enough trained Marshal's are available throughout Scotland to run the programme of events organised by the various motor clubs.

So what does a Marshal do ?? ....everything from car park and spectator control, managing Arrival, Start, "Flying finish", Finish and Service Area control points for Stage Rally's through to running check points for Navigation Rally's, to running the paddock, start lines and emergency stations at Sprints and officiating at Autotests. As a Marshal you will get closer to the competitors and cars than a normal spectator so come on.......... join in and get more out of Motor Sport.

If you think you would like to become a Marshall - and participate in motor sport events rather than just spectate, maybe as a taster before you actually try your hand at competing.... then ADMC are always keen to welcome new Marshal's to the fold. Full training will be provided by the club, and if you are really keen there are opportunities to take an MSA approved training course to become certified as an Official MSA Marshal - a qualification highly sought after by National event organisers. See Above Report

ADMC Marshal's Championship

There is even a specific Marshal's / Organiser's Championship for a Trophy at the end of each year. Marshal's earn points by attending or organising ADMC events or helping out at events organised by other Motor Clubs where ADMC has been asked to assist. Events mean points and the most points wins...

The rules are quite simple, 3 points for marshalling and 5 points for helping to organise an event. That's it.....see how you are doing on the Marshal's Championship table

Help out at Scottish Forest Stage Rallies ?
